" A strike at Troy, Michigan-based Delphi would cripple its biggest customer, General Motors Corp. The UAW says it will walk out if a bankruptcy judge scraps Delphi's union contracts and Chief Executive Officer Steve Miller responds by cutting hourly wages to as low as $12.50 from as much as $27."

This sounds like it's going to be a slug-fest
in the original, old-fashioned union-vs-management
style.

Like the lady said, fasten your seatbelts, it's
gonna be a bumpy ride.

Time to sell GM short?

Jim

Time to put the whold damn thing out of it's misery.

Shoot, Shovel and Shut up.

Life will go on without the likes of Delphi or General Motors.

Life may actually be better without them. They sure aren't worth the trouble they are causing now.

GM and Delphi still prefer American Products to those from other advanced countries while buying facilities or instruments for their production in China.

killing GM and Delphi might be a good idea, but so is killing Ford. quite frankly, i dont care about them. sure im a GM person, but the last new GM car my family bought was an 87 chevy wagon. and i own a 94 Oldsmobile wagon. no problem with the older GMs. its the new ones that are messed up. and same with ford autos. in fact, my parents are now chrysler people, while my brother is into hyundai, and i am into old cars that doesnt have like, a million things going wrong and defects in the paint, uncomfy, etc i actually like the Mazda Six series. hate the new corvette, think they could do better with the camaro concepts, only GM product i really like is the Solstice, and thats it. otherwise, kill GM-America and we would be better off. GM Holden might actually make a profit by not having to send cars to USA to sell.

Kill GM, kill Ford, kill Delphi...

Is this the same BBS on which I routinely see the bemoaning of lost American manufacturing jobs?

Just for variety, it appears (according to Business Week) that the non-native president of Toyota USA has gotten himself into a heap of grief by not understanding the sexual harassment laws in the states...

well, considering how much GM is losing money even with laying off jobs same as ford and delphi, i am of the opinion that they are losing money because of bad management decisions. (they killed off several good cars in the 80s for the worse IMO) but, a few of the domestic brands are actually making money, though not enough to keep GM as a whole bouyant. kill off the heads, reform the smaller companies, to have a new group of automotive manufacturers, since it does seem that Pontiac AND Saturn are both the only ones that are activately selling, while Buick and Cadillac are still not selling enough volume to justify the massive investments they both recieved, and GMC is losing money, not enough trucks to compete with the likes of Ford F series, Ford is losing a battle with the idealists and realists, trying to introduce new models and trying to shake off their deserved reputation of being "Ford Rental car manufacturers" which had the boring models being developed by focus groups, not exactly ideal but it worked for a short time. Delphi, im not sure whats up with them, although ive heard many stuff, and most seem to imply that delphi is losing money and its either go bankrupt or go offseas. Chrysler, having already been bought by Daimler, has been very good in sales and marketing compared to the other 2, and since their key models have been consistently revamped and restyled more often, and bringing the Hemi back wasnt a chance decision, it was a smart decision keying on the emotions of people, and now with their Challenger concept, they are sure to keep buyers.

Charles:

Yes this is the same Board where you see the wailing and gnashing of teeth over the loss of American Manufacturing -

Like Euclid Terex, like Detroit Diesel Allison, like Electro Motive and all the others that GM spun off.

Fortunately they didn't croak, but GM left them on their own to make it or not.

It looks like nobody relly needs Delphi, it looks like nobody really needs GM either 'cause they aren't selling that many cars.

I keep hearing about Ford having troubles with their V8 motors. If they are hell-bent on screwing up, then they will follow GM into irrelevency-land.

Now, one more time, a car has to start up and go every day. A car has to look nice and be comfortable to ride in. A car can't cost a king's ransome every time it needs fuel. Honda, Nissan and Toyota have got that down pat.

Anyone else who wants to stay in the car business has got to provide the same thing with every car they sell. GM isn't doing it.

C-ya!

Oh come on, guys! If we're not going to make automobiles anymore, what in the HELL are we going to manufacture??!! If any of you are out buying celebratory flowers and champaigne over the Delphi/GM mess, I hope you are saving some energy to dig your own economic graves.

It's been a long week, and I'm tired and crabby!

I figured Delphi was toast years ago. Must have been a real shock to have to compete with suppliers that got very lean and mean to survive.

I can't remember exact numbers but I thought Delphi had 5 years of guaranteed work when spun off and after that they had to compete. I figured their death would be right after exposure to the real world quoting.

Coming from a now defunct trim OEM, I don't have a lot of sympathy. After they gobbled up the pie, we survived on crumbs.

Welcome to the real world.

Stephanie:

Who is we? I don't make cars and I didn't mess up GM.

My daughter's Honda(s) are just as American made as my Ranger truckie. Last time I checked, Marysville, Ohio is in the USA.

I am toroughly disgusted with the way that GM/Delphi is running their business into the ground, that's all. They are making American businesses look like chumps.

GM had a lot to be proud of and they trashed it. Honda started out making pukey little motorcycles and they now make one of the world's best cars. That's a success story if there ever was one.

If you think your week has been long and you are crabby now, just think if you had a Chevrolet that didn't start when you wanted to head home from work.

Champaigne and flowers?

Just the right celebration when you take delivery of your new Ridgeline.

JimK,

I guess you're right. I don't make cars and I doubt my personal financial situation will be affected in any way. It isn't my problem. I am not my brother's keeper.

Why don't I feel better now? :(

because you care about every American company regardless of how theyre run? sorry for sounding blunt, but hey, I myself worked for the Navy, and we were making parts for the imported Rolls Pegasus engines for the marine harriers.

in fact, nearly every aftermarket companies are now using imported steels, imported components, etc since the 70s i believe.

myself, i have an Olds, runs fine everytime, but GM killed off Oldsmobile, when it was becoming too boring, and GM lost sight of what GM meant. same with Ford. in case you dont know, Ford seems to have better success selling cars to other countries than here. (UK Ford Cosworth Escort MK2 with RS engine) and since Ford owns several import companies such as Aston Martin, Jaguar, Mazda,Volvo, to name a few, and those makes are also suffering a bit of a downturn except for the mazda which seems to be as popular as before...

The President of GM is the former Chief Financial Officer for GM. Lee Iacoca was successful at both Ford and Chrysler because he was a Car Person, not a Finance Person.

GM seems to me to have always been the model of corporate organization. That model may have worked when they had 50% of the US market, and their only major competitors were Ford and Chrysler. Now they have a bunch of agressive Japanese competitors, as well as European and Korean competitors.

GM's trouble is, those competitors make pretty good vehicles, and make many of them in the US. My Nissan Frontier truckie was made in Symrna, Tenn, and is a fine little vehicle.

I don't think GM will ever recover until they put a Car Person in charge. They don't have a lot of time.

Could these workers possibly pick a worse time to strike? You're supposed to strike when the company is BOOMING and really needs your labor to keep profits up. Delphi's current state doesn't really fall into that category.

I understand them not wanting to lose their $27 dollars an hour, but welcome to the real world. If those workers were really worth $27 per hour, they could easily get $27 per hour someplace else. The fact is, their jobs aren't work $27 per hour, and they are lucky Delphi is even offering them $12.50.

So you think Toyota, Honda, Nissan have it down pat. I agree with you that GM has done a lot of things badly but they're not as bad as the perception that is prevalent amongst consumers. Toyota has pulled off a marketing coup with the Prius and everybody forgets about the big Suv and pickup they make. They have a new plant coming on to make more of these but hardly anybody talks about that but instead how stupid of GM to invest so heavily in them.
Nephew had a Toyota Celica that was a piece of crap (2 engines and a tranny starting to go) got rid of it and bought a G6 and wouldn't go back. If you look at the JD Power reports you'll see GM has two plants at the top of the list. They didn't get to the top by not working hard and not setting high standards. The Impala, Monte Carlo plant and the Lacrosse/Allure, Grand Prix plant consistently rank high.
I don't know about wages in the import assembly plants in the States but here in Canada they're damn near equivalent to GM, Ford, Chrysler.
Like some of my friends who say that workers at GM make too much money they wouldn't turn away if they could get a job there. I'm sure that's the case with some people here in this group. It's called envy and people like to knock down people who they see as getting a better deal than them.
You may have surmised that I work for Gm and your right. I've been with them for 21 years in Oshawa as a tradesman.
