There's a little kink in the front straight, he came through there leaned over, front wheel a foot in the air, banging off shifts and steering with his feet, passing other riders. National number riders, not some dweebs off the Ride to Support Fair Treatment for Albino Dwarfs.

    KR on a roadracer was pretty much without peer.

    @ Limy - did you go to the match races in '73 ?

    I can't remember ever hearing the nickname, so had to look it up.

    It is interesting to see Boris positioning for position. Politics right? There will be a new leader yet I doubt the EU will give better terms as it seems the whole exit process is so bad that it tries to keep anyone from leaving. Given this impasse I am surprised no new waiting prospective members have been allowed to join.

    I can understand the problem if a country were not very stable and while a new member had a war or civil war occur. I think Ukraine being welcome is out of the question for example.

    Ukraine has no "civil war". It has an invasion.

    Even so, it is probably better-off in the current arrangement with each of the EU and NATO, and will be for easily five to fifteen years.

    So are their partial/potential partners. Better-off.

    There is a lot more to sorting Ukraine's "issues" than just their Russia problem.

    Just taking RECOGNITION of those took a human-generational change. Actually FIXING their curses will take at least one more generational shift. Or may never happen.

    Not that it has yet been demonstrated to matter, but "Oh, BTW" - their new Prez is billed as a former comedian. Because he was good at it.

    By training, OTOH? He's actually a lawyer. That could work. Or not.

    It makes me laugh, because for such an *important* thing as Brexit, Parliament is still having its summer holidays, from July 25th and back to *work* on Tues 3rd Sept.
    But I did read that the whole of the EU negotiating team have been sent on their summer holidays early.
    Because they are all wanted back in Brussels early this year in readiness, as they are expecting *negotiations to take place*...

    Good answer actually, but it's the wrong era, I meant the 70's when Sheene & Roberts were the big players.


    Superfrog was Yvon Duhamel a French Canadian who often rode for the US team in the transatlantic trophy, ……….not only for his French ancestry either, his riding style aboard the physically big and exceedingly fearsome Kawasaki triple racers (they were all engine and no handling**) was often said to look like a frog hanging on for dear life

    ** ''My'' marshal post at Brands was Graham Hill Bend, and from my trackside vantage point, as the big Kwacker (and others) accelerated down the Cooper Straight (back then they were Bottom Bend & Bottom Straight) I (and others) could watch the frames bend as the power was turned on, thus making the bikes snake and shake their heads.

    Nope, I remember was booked to go but a rush job came in for the Easter weekend (and daboss was waving big £s) ………….and because of that I missed ever seeing Cal Rayburn - he was killed in NZ in December of that year.

    That's too bad You read about the "booming Harley-Davidson muscling through the pack" but that's all a bunch of crap. Cal was almost boring to watch, he looked so slow ... as he passed everyone He was extremely smooth.

    Speaking of "superfrog", it was because he was French Canadian and named Yvon. But everyone I know called him "the stupid dork with the beard." He crashed more times than ten other guys. And it wasn't because the Kwacker was unrideable - Nixon did great on the same machine. DuHamel was just a dork. I saw him crash in the pits once, fer chrissake !

    He was partially responsible for Rayborn's last win, tho. In the middle of the short straight right before the corkscrew at Laguna he managed to take out the entire front row on the first lap, when he decided to scratch his ass or something and crashed.

    Same race had Paul Smart on a Kwacker doing okay, but we were all amazed. He was hopping all over the bike like a monkey. "Who is that doofus and what the heck is he doing ?" A few years later everyone was doing it. That was the first I'd seen anyone in the US hang off.

    I still think it looks stupid

    AFAIK ''Hanging off'' was first done by or ''pioneered'' by John Surtees, and IIRC (it's on YouTube somewhere) because one of his bikes (possibly the big Vincent special) wouldn't lean over far enough at Brands.


    As for looks I agree with you, but think it more awkward and untidy than stupid.

    Would have thought the name Kwaka riders in that era, at least in Europe, would be Ballington and Hansford, rather than a mostly AMA specialist. KR and Gregg had a few good races in the 350s, remember there was a good pic in the MC press back then of Kenny trying to turn back the green machine's throttle on the straight somewhere as they were dicing.

    One of Hansford's sons is a racer(car), bad luck runs in that family it seems at a certain age, he just lost one of his nuts to testicular cancer.

    Talking of hanging off... Marc Marqeuz takes it to a whole new level (68degrees).
    And although they're all good at saving the front ends nowadays my lifting themselves back up on their knee, he does it best...

    Nope, it was the late great Jarno Saarinen who pioneered that Sami.

    The 'photo' of John Surtees supposedly hanging off a Vincent was actually a spoof shot (though real) of journalist Mark Forsyth back in the 80s, when he wrote an article on the history of knee dragging.

    Get real!

    Parliaments and Congresses have dominated knee dragging and knuckle dragging alike, ever since they still spoke Greek or Latin.

    That said, we WOULD derive greater entertainment value and see far less confusion about outcomes if the buggers had to meet on the track instead of indoors...

    Perhaps you two-wheelie lot are onto a new definition of "bicameralism?"

    Oh well, live and learn, …..but there's a discrepancy somewhere Peter, John Surtees last bike GP race was 1960 (Wikipedia), yet Saarinen didn't start GP racing until 1968. (Wikipedia)


    OTOH I suppose if I could be bothered I'd look up on YouTube where Surtees ''claims'' he was the first.
