AP article about GM factory in Russia

MOSCOW (AP) - General Motors Corp. may build a new car production facility in Russia, officials said Monday, several months after the U.S. automobile giant's landmark joint venture temporarily shut down amid a parts dispute with its state-controlled Russian partner.

GM will find out exactly the same thing the thief from Fair Lane discovered. Building something in Russia is like burning hundred dollar bills to keep warm, on a Siberian night. Henry Ford got his buddy Franklin to steal all of Packard's tooling for Russia. Henry also had a truck factory in Russia and the thanks he got was a giant slap in the face.

The engineers, and technicians, Ford sent there were kidnapped and told they could not return home. They never did. The truck plant was renamed and nationalized soon after. Ford wound up having to pay off American families and American banks for the privelage of helping the Ruskies.

Apparently GM is currently as stupid as Ford once was. Someone should ask them about the great profits from China.

An American named Claremont sent a man named Flint to Russia to sell steam boats.

In the late 1970's or early 80's a former gf of mine went to Russia as part of a preservation effort regarding the Siberian Crane (the bird, not the heavy lifter).

She asked her Russian colleague how it was that he had a not-so-Ruaaisn name, Flint.

The story was in effect that a certain steam boat salesman was never allowed back to the USA.

See that? The Russkies have been up to this mischief for quite some time now.

Really shows how desperate GM is, to want to diversify their risks by going to Russia.

Kind of doubt that the Russian Gov't would keep anyone. Can't say the same for the grey market hoodlums though... They might want a nice female MBA from Harvard or Wharton to keep them warm on those cold Russian nights.

Serve 'em right too. Both of them.

GM has been over there for years now.
But as proof that everything is connected, the same old Buddy of Putin (kind of like a Friend of Bill) that runs Rosoboronexport, which is the official russian arms export agency, just took over AutoVaz, which is the big Russian "company" that makes Ladas.
AutoVaz was briefly a "private company" with shareholders and everything- but Sergei Chemezov, who Putin worked with in Dresden back when they were both KGB, mysteriously became the head of it recently- and unilateraly raised prices, and stopped supply, to GM.

The scenario described in the movie "lords of war", with renegade russian army officers selling arms to the highest bidder may have existed for a few years, but with Putin in the saddle, all that changed fast- nobody but Rosobornexport sells anything anymore, and now it also controls the largest russian automaker, the largest russian aluminum company, and is working on cornering the titanium market as well.

But according to our own couch potato in chief in the White House, "I looked the man in the eye, ... I was able to get a sense of his soul." So Putin is our friend, and we are instead bogged down shooting it out with teenagers in tracksuits in Ramadi.

A former co-worker's father was the controler of the GM factory in Russia. He said the cars being produced were for Russia sale, not import to America in whole or in part.
