From a resources and strategic viewpoint, it actually might be a good deal for the US, if the island was essentially unpopulated. With a sovereign populace things get tricky, and we are (I hope!) past the point of distributing smallpox laden blankets to the natives.
The story about the Army distributing smallpox laden blankets to the natives is total BULLSHIT. It was fabricated by university of Colorado ethnic studies "professor" Ward Churchill. Every aspect of this tail told in 6 or 7 versions was fabricated. He was investigated for 7 allegations of research misconduct. One of witch was the smallpox blanket story and 3 allegations plagiary. He was fired from his tenured position in 1997. Alas like the immunization causes autism hoax this tail lives on. The only known case of anything like this happening was at fort Pitt in 1763 and was done by the British army.

Why not buy Greenland? The Danish sold us the Danish West Indies now known as the US Virgin Islands in 1917.

Because it's not the Dane's to sell. It has its own autonomous population that has the right to vote for independence if it wishes too.

It's like your neighbor selling me your car - money might change hands, but legally it's No Go.

I will do some more searching on the blankets - most of what I saw questioned the "effectiveness" of whatever smallpox spores might have been present, but none said it was a hoax.

This forum and all its fruitcakes need not exist on a machinist forum..it's just not practical. It went from Curly and Moe at the helm to good old Larry, who doesn't know port from starboard!! And you can forget about Shemp as he only speaks Danish

I may be mixing up iceland with greenland, but isn't greenland quite mineral rich. I saw a program on it that said it's loaded with gold, ruby's, and copper just for a few. The biggest problem with mining it is the weather, there's only small window of time to actually mine.

How does that work, does the USA own the water and mineral rights of it's territories?

Other than strategic geographic location, what are the benefits of taking on the burden of a struggling, failing, poverty stricken country like denmark?

Making a bunch of dane's USA citizens doesn't sound like to bright of an idea to me, but I may be wrong. I realize how greenland is gnawing at the bit that we take on their problems, but it seems like we would be purchasing problems.

It would be interesting to know the pro's and con's of making them a US territory.

I'm formally protesting all the English posters for being Sinister.

They drive on the left, have Leftist policies (health care for all? Even the poor? Communism!), and probably are all left-handed. And there's rumors (not "rumours") that their DNA helices twist to the left.

Ban them all, I say. And let's take their countries while we're at it. They'd probably be grateful...

Right, that's really put the cat amongst the pigeons. I am formally protesting your protest. I am, like Mark Rand, cack handed, probably 10% of the population are blessed in this way. Do not practice trying to be left handed,we can pick out imposters a mile off.
As for taking our country it would appear that you already have. I am surrounded by USAF bases. I don't believe that they are staffed because since the terrorist threats started you don't see any furriners in the pubs at all. I was told that they are all on base playing an American game called "Chicken".
Why did the chicken cross the road? Don't know but it wasn't an American chicken, much too dangerous.

Apparently, if you're cack-handed, you have 15% more creativity!
I 'm assuming that report was written by a cack-hander...
I'm right handed and drive on the right and have more affiliation to a gun-toting southern red-neck.
    Protest away...Hell Yeah!

It's from one of Shakespeare's famous soliloquies:

"Could be, or not could be. What was the question?"

The blanket trick seems like a pretty good ideal, what’s not to like- why give the Brits all the credit?
Germ theory was in its infancy.
Grasping that it could be weaponized seems a fairly bright minded innovation for its time.

Are you just stumbling on the point of intentional or accidental ‘genocide’?

What I find interesting about the last five hundred years is it seems to contain a final act in the long process of social friction between differing cultures.

I’ve long had a thesis of this period in that it differs from all the prior instances of that friction and it’s result.
The might be limited simply to its thoroughness though- the dominant culture in the recent case having global reach and irreversibly eliminated any heretofore isolated cultures as they were reached.

I ran across the Sami people’s of the Eurasian taiga recently.
I tossed a cliche at it and supposed the progressive Nordic countries might have approached the issue differently.
    Not the case...
The Beothuks, Aleuts, Sami and every other group met the same fate.
Is the US case any different?
It seems not, at least in its effect if not intent.

    Sami people - Wikipedia

Is there any country which isn’t founded by ruthless doing what had to be done.
No sense trying to pretty it up.
