Labor Day...

First that comes to mind is the 1937 Battle of the Overpass, when Walter Reuther and labor organizers took on FoMoCo.

Labor Day sounds exactly like a tribute to honor those who have made huge sacrifices under difficult conditions. Gordon don't you think its just a tad disrespectful to use it in an attempt at humor?

Dave D I've got the feeling you don't really know what is being celebrated and why.

So to your question then "Nope". You do know that it is celebrated in other countries (including Denmark) but more often than not, on May 1st?

Must admit I was surprised to see it was started in the USA.

Gordon did you actually read the first post in this thread and most of the subsequent posts before you replied? I'm not understanding how the smiley face and comment is related to any of this. Generally people don't use smiley faces when there are clear references to shed blood, death and a massacre. Could you please explain.

As a self appointed authority on the USA I also don't get your "Must admit I was surprised to see it was started in the USA." comment either or was this another attempt at humor? I don't understand how this has anything to do with the original post either. Again, could you please explain.

Hurricane Gordon strikes again.

Dave, it doesn't!
The OP is about Labor Day as a holiday in the USA.
Gordon is talking about Labour Day or Mayday, which is celebrated on the 1st of May.

Don't know how it was before the EU, but in the old Soviet Bloc countries May 1st was celebrated as a huge ass pow-wow with mandatory appearance and
participation in a parade representing whatever group you belonged to.
Cops as cops, military personnel as such, firefighters, ambulance, students plane-jane workers ....

Each participant got 1 free hot-dog and 1 free beer though.

Only if their group had chipped in TWO beers and THREE hot dogs in advance as "handling fees" for the omnipotent "State" that presumed to speak for the lumpen proletariat, though...

"from each according to... wotever-the-f**k we haven't already commandeered... to each according to whatever-the-f**k was useless left-overs"

They only pretended to work. State only pretended to feed them.

America's "Labor Day" is different. All folks work. We expect to be productive.

For OUR OWN GAIN.

It's a holiday because we HAVE been productive, and have earned that "day-out" to enjoy what we have accomplished, so-far, that year.

Ain't no, way, no how, any Gordon-munchkin will EVER understand just how f**king PERSONAL that is, most junior of burger flippers..... to most seniour of CEO's.

YES. We did "make that", dammit. However great.. or humble. Do better, next year, too.

Unions do not "own" that day. Political parties do not "own" that day. B'longs to ALL of us.

Closer parallel to "crops-are-in-now, catch-your-breath" harvest festival or Octoberfest than to any Socialist circle-jerk or Communist Many-f**ks-you.

True: Hurricane Gordon strikes again.

Very True: - Unions do not "own" that day. Political parties do not "own" that day. B'longs to ALL of us.
- Ain't no, way, no how ...will EVER understand just how f**king PERSONAL that is.

Once again, Gordon took a jab, a weak one but a jab none the less at the USA.

Wish we could just pipe the National Capitol sewage system over his pointy little-head.

He could then LEGITIMATELY keep on with sayin':

"See, just have a look at my DICK!

I keep telling you America is nothing but SHIT, and there's the PROOF!

Miguels244 has even supplied me with the proper liquor-tax stamps for it so I can SELL it as an alternative to Gammel Dansk since the buggers scarpered-off to Norway!

I mean.. the Capitol, right?

No Political Critter believes his s**t would ever STINK, yah?

You've missed out on that fun Bill!

Sure, chipped in prolly more than two or three in advance.
But, at the same time the majority had found more than his/her share of "hey! it's just fell off the truck" items here, there and ... well everywhere.
Survival, that was!

LOL! Human nature is "in the bone" as the Chinese put it. You look out for yerself, 'coz if you fail to, you are of no help those next on the ripples of expansion .. your family. IF there is a surplus, your extended family, then clan/village, then province, and even a national identity in wealthy times.

Times are sore tough? You and yours. All else becomes FOOD!

"Political Systems" are just the hood-ornaments on the allocators sharing out the misery.

Wealth? Somehow always finds channels without THEIR intervention. Or even sight, yah?

Universal human thing, actually. Central Europe had no patent on it.

Mind, I'd rate Ukraine pretty high on the "Chronic GF Ourselves" list for what COULD BE a rather more well-off entity. Mal-Asia. Indo-hooliga. Tied-land. E-gipped. Eyes-ran. In-do-yah. Bras-ill. ARGHH!-in-tiny-yah.

Then again? So, too, Japan... and the USA...

"Free" Social Services? Government Money? Handouts? Organized and legislated Altruism?

Run for it. SOMEBODY or SOME THING will be collecting!, and they have way to Hell and GONE less than 100% efficiency if even it was NOT simple THEFT!

:)
