Have a tapping head that recently failed and cost of a new one required medical intervention. Have limited resources in our area and can't seem to find a place that can accomplish the task with even a mild guarantee of success. I'm new to this world, so don't beat me up too badly. Tool is SG 56, PN SG 0000144ET.

Are the miter gears shot, or does it just need bearings and seal?

If the gears are OK, just take it apart yourself.
It's really not rocket science.
ESPECIALLY the ones like you have there.

You may be able to get the gears from Hardinge?
Maybe not tho too?
Not sure if a commercially available set would retrofit in there or not.
Quite possibly tho.
Commercially available are likely not as good of gears tho.
The OEM's are hrdnd and ground.

I'm actually quite surprised that you have a tapping unit that is bad?
Shirley you will wear out 10 drill units to one tap unit?
