mystery starting motor 3-53 detroit diesel

so i am picking up this pump unit from federal sales Oregon national forest--next week
i did not preview

pump appears to be unique variety provided naval warships and qualifying
merchant marine for catastrophic water ingress event--able to handle sizeable
debris

my interest in pic is starter motor which may be hydraulic hand pump powered

anyone have further knowledge ?

lucky click took me to ebay item---unit on the pictured 3-53 is Bosch hydrotor--
a knowledgeable blogger recalls detroit diesel product literature of 55 years ago offering hydrotor starter for special apps

All the detail you need is in the GM diesel inline 71 series repair manual.....As for alternative starters ,you can even get a Garret turbine starter that runs that runs on natural gas......I have two kinds of air starter for GMs ,the old Ingersoll Rand bendix drive type,and the much better StartMaster ,which is an air solenoid operated pre engaging starter ,a lot easier on ring gear teeth. ..Underground mining machines never use electric start,but rely on some other method usually air.
 
Joe Micheals wrote about them on IIRC some low head hydrodams, a blackstart procedure
he wrote about.
 
There is something poetic about a reformed ear doctor with a fondness for old school Detroits.
