A friend and I split the cost of a 1950's Hyster YT40 three wheel forklift. I think we lucked out. Everything worked on it, but the transmission made some noise, and wanted to roll back a bit when in neutral. We hauled it back to the shop and found the transmission was almost completely empty. After fishing around in the bottom of the tranny with a magnet and not finding any metal chunks, we topped it off with fluid and it drives nicely now. Whether any significant damaged happened in the past remains to be seen. The brakes even work!
The gear shift lever is very sloppy. The groove in the pivot ball has a large amount of wear where the alignment pin rides. What would be the best rod to repair that with? I assume the ball is some sort of hardened steel and mild steel would wear down quickly.
For clarification, this is the pivot ball I'm talking about. The one in the Hyster is MUCH worse, but only in one spot, not all along the slot.
