Whats behind the nipple?

Hyster reach truck N40XMR which has can extend/retract the mechanism housing the forks- what is the nipple (is that the correct name?) for? Whats in the hole when nipple is removed?

It's a grease nipple. Like the name suggests, it's for greasing that joint. A grease gun is the correct tool for the job. As you can see it has been serviced due to the grease oozing out.

So the oil nipples on my Myford ML7 lathe are the genuine Zerk pattern, as opposed to the ball ended grease nipples on other machines. Fascinating!
