Mazak QTN Nexus 450M II Tailstock Alignment?

We are trying to align the tailstock on our Mazak Lathe (Nexus 450MII) How is it done? After looking at the mechanical parts manual, we tried to adjust the center location by loosening the screws around the collar of the live center assembly, as well as loosening the two screws that lock the adjuster eccentric (top center of tailstock housing w/graduated markings 0-10) We can get the alignment on the x axis to 0, but can't figure out how to get the proper height adjusted in? Anybody got any input that might get us going?

I'm not familiar with your particular machine, but I think you can only adjust the 'turning' axis i.e. X axis. If the Y axis is out very much you have other issues.

Are you sweeping tail with turret or just cutting part to check for taper?

We have the indicator mounted to the chuck, rotating the indicator around the live center.

The tailstock is adjusted by turning an eccentric bushing. It can only align the turning axis. Set the tailstock with your indicator, then turn a bar and set taper just as you would on a manual, with clamping pressure from the tailstock. You are only interested in TURNING without taper.

As a little experiment - take your mag base, stick it on a nice chunk of steel (like a vise hard jaw that's not attached to a vice), and zero the indicator on that same piece of steel. Now grab the whole thing and hold it upside down, and watch the indicator reading change.

Then - stop using that method to indicate the tailstock (or anything horizontal, for that matter).

If the machine has been in a crash and that is why the tailstock is off then you may have sever issues else were like the head stock out of alighnment...just saying.
If the headstock has been tweaked you will NEVER get that tailstock right.

One thing you need to do is make a tool that fits into your tail stock with about 6" of straight fit on it so you can sweep around the tool as well as length ways.
Just sweeping the center will not tell you if the tailstock is straight with it's axis.

You prolly are but be sure to use a BestTest kind of indicator,a big ass 1'' travel indicator will cause errors because of the weight of the indicator sagging.
