    Default

By the looks of it,and the description here: http://catalog.starrett.com/catalog/...re&GroupID=419
it would seem to be used more for inspection work.

That's my guess, and I'm stickin' to it!

    Default Modified Vernier Caliper

Given the detailed description of the gage and its physical attributes, basically it is a modification of your common vernier caliper. The external and internal measuring jaw assembly together with a jewelled dial read-out are equipped with an automatic pulse-calibration mechanism. As describe, new users need not to famliarize the "feel" to get a conclusive measure. Maybe the function or purpose of such apparatus is similar to the ratchet commomnly attached to micrometers. I hope that it was an intelligent inference regarding the use of the instrument.
