Can anybody put together a list of the graduations and what they are. I cant find anything on the internet on it...
I know for example that a 4r has 8ths 16ths 32nds and 64ths and I know what a 5r is but what are the rest

Look on amazon or someplace, look up a 6r and zoom in on the picture and you should be able to read what it is.

I prefer 3R, which is 1/10, 1/50, 1/32, and 1/64. 16R is 1/50, 1/100, 1/32, and 1/64. They are listed in several tool catalogs, none of which are at hand.

Currently available graduations from Starrett are defined on pages 290 & 291 of this: Precision Tool Catalog Those available from Mitutoyo are shown on pages E-36 through E-39 of this: http://www.mitutoyo.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/US-1002.pdf PEC shows theirs here: PEC Tools - Flexible Rules Don't know if Suburban Tool makes rules.

In my opinion, one of the most important decisions to be made when buying a rule is whether you want the graduations to be machine divided or photo engraved (etched). The differences are explained fairly well beginning on page 3 of this... http://littlemachineshop.com/Instructions/SteelRules.pdf ...except that the current Starrett catalog states their rules are now also photo engraved. Don't know which method Mitutoyo uses, but if they too photo engraved there's a possibility nobody machine divides rules any more. I don't really know. But avoid any rule with lithographed graduations - they're usually much too wide for good work (at least the ones I've seen).

Regards

Are there any standard graduation types that would have mm 1/2 mm and 1/100 and 1/50 on them?

Yes. They're my new favorite. Ordered 6 of them. 5 kept strategically around the shop, and one in my apron.
