How do ceramic gauge blocks hold up?

Never used 'em but we're considering buying some. Are they easy to break or chip? Anything else to be aware of? We want to calibrate some optical measuring equipment that doesn't work with the shiny surface of metal blocks.

I've never come across any brand of ceramic gauge blocks that weren't good and they'll last much longer than the steel ones. They are of course more expensive than "standard" types.

I've never known any that chipped when handled with reasonable care but if they do "chip" that won't affect the height in the same way as a "dent" or scratch would in a steel one.

Think granit surface plate as opposed to a steel one.
