Once the data is captured, and stored, massaging it to customer-format is a simple excercise.

Likewise, capturing, storing, arranging the data is easy - but needs a lot of skill and experience to be fast, cheap and efficient all at once, especially scalable and in large scale above 100M records.

I agree, and is the spirit of the first step I've taken out of pen and paper. I've purchased an inexpensive Mahr caliper with wireless data collection capability, and built an internal inspection reporting spreadsheet (as the first step out of paper. spreadsheets everywhere isn't always a good thing) that has VB code written to manage what is presented to users, auto-shades measurements that are out of spec, etc.

The idea was to demonstrate proof-of-concept with the Mahr Wireless Caliper internally, that it didn't have to ALL be paper based and retyped.

I've coded auto-reporting to match customer formats where that can happen. And for customers with heavily revision-controlled spreadsheets we've agreed to fill out I've done as you've suggested: I collect the data in the tool I'm prototyping, then copy those cells out to the Customer report.

Again, I was sonar pinging the community to calibrate my perceptions using the body of experience out there. To see how far or in what direction I should go overall.
