would anybody know what the little thumb screw is for? mine seems to be doing nothing.

It's a fine adjust. Usually has a range of +/- maybe 10 minor divisions or so. Once you get the needle somewhere in the middle half of the scale you should be able to center it with that knob. It will have no effect if the needle is off-scale, but if its having no effect with the needle where it is in your pic then something is probably wrong.
