Plus, if you need to measure larger threads, just buy a larger mic frame and corresponding standard. You'll already have the anvils.

Just remembered a small potential problem with micrometer inserts. Same applies to thread wires too. I've posted this a while ago but maybe worth mentioning again.

Both assume that the flank angle is theoretically correct. Depending on how accurate a result you need or think you have then a deviation on the theoretically correct flank angle of the threaded component will make a difference.

Thread flank angles do have a standard tolerance. Note too that these tolerances are for half flank angles!
N.B. The tolerance is less of course on ground thread plug and ring gauges.

Same situation as with thread coating. Layer thickness increases the pitch diameter by 4 times the layer thickness for a 60º thread and 8 times for ACME an Tr.

This thread made me curious as to how micrometer thread inserts compared to my own thread inserts. I bought a pair of Mitutoyo micrometer thread inserts (I get a nice rebate) to measure a 2mm / 12 TPI pitch and measured a thread with both my specially made type and the Mitutoyo type. I must admit the result surprised me.

I can take and post pictures if anyone wants to see what I did but there are those that might regard it as spamming. I have no intention of putting the special FMS micrometer thread inserts into production or selling so ……?
