Default is my vernier caliper bigger than yours

I bought a job lot of micrometers of fleabay and also got this vernier caliper. I am unlikely to use the caliper that much as it is 1200mm long (over 3 ft ish). Can anybody beat this?

The caliper is made by chesterman and appears to be in good nick.

    Andrew,

Second Chesterman tool I've heard of now. I have a 26'' height gage. And unfortunately, yes I have an 82'' vernier that I hang over the headstock for one particular and crummy job. It doesn't really count though, 'cause it's chinese. Chestermans may not be to popular here in the US, but what a piece of craftsmanship!

Yours is only half as long as the one I used when I ran a DeVlieg. Used to have to set 123 blocks up to lay the beam over to keep it straight. Yours might come in handy if you ever machine the sides of a small die set.

I've seen some 6 footers at auction sales and there was a bit of a frenzy for them but like yours they are impractical because the jaws are so short.

I have a 500mm (20") Mitutoyo with 7" wide jaws so it can measure approx. 14" diameter in the middle of a cylindrical shape unlike your type which are limited to the end of the bar. A poor design in my opinion.
