Removing cross test vial from Starrett machinists level?

I have an old Starrett 97 6" machinists level I picked up on Ebay. I'm replacing the vial with a newly purchased vial for a 98-6. No problem with (famous last words...). Anyways, the cross test vial has some rust around and under it, making it difficult to read. Since the vial is still in, it's difficult to clean the area around it. There was a small screw plug on one side, and some plaster of Paris to hold it in. No hole on the other side.

Does anyone know how to get that vial out? I soaked the plaster and have been able to remove all of it so far, but the vial won't budge!

old level they usually use plaster and softens with water. obviously newer glue like silicone and or instant glues more difficult to remove. sometimes its a one shot thing not meant for repairs. you just buy a new level, too much problems to repair
