This is a super newbie question but I cannot seem to unscrew the contact tip on my 640-431 depth gage. I’m not sure if it even comes off but I’d like to see if I can put a pointed tip on instead of the flat one. Does anyone know if or how the contacts come off? Thanks.

Most indicators have a screw on tip. If it's knurled, just grab and twist. It may have some tread locker on it, but it should be removable. I would try needle nose pliers if you can't remove it with your fingers.

Since what you have is basically a dial indicator attached to a base, any of Starrett's dial indicator tips should fit; metric-reading indicators take M2.5 threaded tips; inch-reading indicators take #4-48 threads. The plunger MAY have a cross-hole in it to allow you to loosen the tip without putting torque on the indicator movement.

Thanks. Below is the type of tip I have. I wouldn’t imagine the tips being non-replaceable.
