Is there a Noga style (single clamp) by a different manufacturer that is not* $400?

    Mitutoyo
Mitutoyo 7033B Magnetic Base with Hydraulic Lock for 3/8" and 8mm Stem

And of course there is countless amount of chinese rebrands but Noga and Mitutoyo are probably one of the cheapest "real brand name products"

No, but they are surely on the right track and have similar-looking competition.

DI stresses are tiny, nothing is going to "fail" from the application of such modest force. Even so - simple physics will show that thin solid rod will deflect more under even modest force than larger-diameter thinwall tubing.

Otherwise, I cannot get any more excited about Noga's articulated "arm" being any more stable once locked than about ignorant serpents alleged turned into rigid staffs by either of Viagra or divine intervention.

As chance would have it, I actually have one that appears to be 100% identical to that one, apart from the colour. I bought it for one of my guys so he'd not need to borrow mine. I found it on ebay and thought it looked better than the usual cheap stands, so I gave it a shot. I think it's Taiwanese origin. It was a lot less than $300, I think it was like £80 ($100) or so.

It's heavy and robust, at the cost of being a bit clumsy. The hydraulic mechanism is a bit spongy, and the weight of the arm combined with the soft clamping action makes me wary of it's sag and rigidity. The fine adjuster is more sensitive than the Noga, but not in the same league as the Fisso/MP-Tec. It was certainly worth the $100 I paid for it, but not $300.
