There are a number of fine tools, as purchased, which came wrapped in this paper(gauge block set, magnetic cylinder square, etc.).I normally keep them wrapped up, when not in use, in this paper in a warm dry drawer in the basement furnace room as I am a home shop machinist type. My precision tools can be stored this way for long time periods when not in use. In summer, it can also be quite humid for a couple of months and then I will use a portable dehumidifier.

Under these conditions, I would like to know approximately how often does one need to replace the VPI paper wrapping to keep it effective? Also, can I buy a roll of it and store what I don't need in a sealed plastic bag or does it lose its effectiveness with time anyway so is it better to just buy what I need periodically?

Most mfg talk about a 2-3 year shelf life. A plastic bag may not fully stop the vapor from evaporating, but multiple bag could slow it down. Or if stored in an airtight metal container- life should be decades. You can also get VCI stretch wrap plastic- works nice for wrapping die sets.

It definitely has a shelf life. I don't use a lot of it, so the small roll I buy from ULine expires long before I use it up.
