How deep is it supposed to be?
Is it a rounded groove, or a square one? Can't really tell from the picture.

When I was starting out we would take an old slitting saw to surface grinder and make one side the max for go and the other side the min for the no go . I wouldn’t recommend trying it free hand. A good blade mike is also nice to have . Good luck
It's a square groove and the diameter major diameter .810 and minor diameter is .781. I have attached another screenshot.

Use a small plug gage. You can even 'sharpen' the end by grinding a little off of the length. You should be able to feel it drop in even though it's only 0.014 deep.
