I almost was going to say why would metrology need a mod, then I remember getting ripped on as being a stuck in my ways dinosaur by our resident troll because I didn't trust digital calipers.

I'm sure I didn't quite express it like that although that was probably what I thought.
A caliper, be it vernier, dial or digital, does what no other measuring tool can do considering the price.
As to not "trusting" a digital caliper then to me that indicates you have never bought a new decent one or you don't know what they can and can't do.
In Europe you would be regarded as a dinosaur.
