The reason for having to have a moderator? Look at how many posts the past month have had nothing to do with metrology.
You have to have some form of authority to keep things straight. I'm not so sure what you think is so hard about moderating a forum, it's pretty straightforward.

I've just looked to see if you've ever started a thread in metrology. If you have I can't find it.

If you think it's easy being a moderator why haven't you volunteered?

I didn't know we were volunteering lol. No I don't think I have to be honest but I do have experience with metrology equipment from hand tools though vision systems. I guess I never had a question that wasn't able to be answered at work.

I suppose it is tough when you're smarter than everybody else Gary.

If he is getting at that I think I know it all because of my comment it was exactly not that lol. I was trying to convey that although I have experience with different metrology tools I never posted in this forum because I was able to ask someone I worked with to find the correct answer.

To be fair, he only goes off topic on calipers and Denmark vs the US healthcare/gov't/blue collar vs white collar/prescriptions/ and our current president...

imo best to one who's a little indifferent and not an anxious participant. Also best that they don't approach it as wanting to delete and change whatever content doesn't serve their view of worthy. There's another over moderated forum here, wrecks it imo. Want to chase people off? Start changing what someone writes. Rude wrong or indifferent, there is at least the integrity of content in that some poster said it, verses some over keen moderator wanting it all to smell like roses. The words I want attributed to me are my own, and I expect the same would hold true when reading someone else's posts.

Ban or warn, don't start editing, which you know, you know who, as already declared he'd do

Any kind of editing is generally frowned upon, I don't like it did to me so I don't do it. Usually a message to the poster can solicit a change, or just delete it if it's really that bad, which is rare.

Personally I'm against banning unless countless warnings go unheeded. Probably easier to just delete posts than ban members. I'm wondering who has written they'd edit as I've not read that. Leigh edited now and then to the annoyance of some.

I suppose you would be. I've never known what the pointy end of the stick feels like

I'm wondering who has written they'd edit as I've not read that.
    this for example:

If I were moderator I wouldn't ban you but I most certainly would delete posts like that. It serves no useful purpose.
in fairness, you did say delete not edit, but seems to me a bit potAto potato as there's the intent to interfere to bring content to what you think is a useful purpose. It may be a noble intent, but takes away more than adds imo as us plebes realize what we're reading doesn't have the integrity of being what or all of what was said.

"In fairness"? That's a new one from you. The point made was editing yet you get that to include deleting. I was under the impression you had a better grasp of English. Maybe your name is Pierre Mcgyver?

This thread should have been locked long ago. It certainly shows why forums need moderators.

    This.
ANY editing of someones post is bad form in my book.
    This isn't 1984.
    Yet...

BTW - I see it's another day so I'm glad to see Gordo's dropped insulting Plastic and jumped on you now LoL!

I would suggest that any person who indulges in ad hominem attacks, tries to get the last word in a discussion, or edits/deletes posts that have not been reported by multiple viewers as offensive is not a suitable person for the job of Moderator.

I'm not at all certain that I'm innocent of the above crimes either.

Nearly every thread Gordon comments in becomes a thread about Gordon. Like this one. Imagine a whole forum of that. Might as well call it the Gordon Forum. Then again maybe that would be a good idea, and return this one to Metrology. For myself, I posted my metrology questions in the General forum, because I preferred the way General was moderated.

Volunteering or complaining? Given the thread's wandering it's hard to know.

At least we know our elusive Pimpernel is still above ground. Just listed a Kasto Cold Saw for sale.

Forum needs a Moderator with a tolerant, light hand. The sort of personality and human skills of an Ox, CBlair, Greg Menke. G Gaskill, several others who set a tone so they do not HAVE to intervene often, even Milacron himself.

Interested in the subject they moderate, hopeful as to sharing of useful input, but not prone to personally taking-on every single arriving poster to wrangle over minutia - just to prove their OWN prowess in the field.

Mind.. helps if the posters follow suit...
