I've never used the taper function, but mine appears to be the same as labeeman's. Mine in a Newall DP700, two axis, carriage and cross slide. I am curious how the "touch"ing is done to maintain accuracy.

It has been awhile since I used the taper attachment, and yes there is a lash problem that either requires having the taper attachment travel a distance before the tool meets the work, or pulling back on the tool post by hand will get most lash out.
Some years ago, someone here mentioned cutting from the backside of the part does this automatically, I remember cutting some short tapers in a collet like that.

Does anyone have the instructions for using the taper attachment?

I have several versions. They are pretty basic and do not provide anything on troubleshooting it.

I can scan and send them if you send me a PM with your email address. It will be a few days before I can get to doing it.

After grinding and rebuilding mine I set the taper on zero, mounted an indicator to the lathe bed and zeroed the slide to the bed using the eccentric bearings, setting them for the level of tightness that felt right. It's worked pretty well, I can usually set the swivel and it's pretty close the the angle I want on a cut.
