10EE: top slide nut adjustment...am I missing a piece?

This is on an EE10, 1942.
The bronze nut for the top slide has a threaded hole, but nothing threaded in. The hole does not go all the way through to the compound screw. It looks suspiciously like some kind of adjustment for backlash. I presume my lathe is missing something. Any thoughts on what should be there and how it is used? Photos appreciated in case I need to make something.

Your manual has most of the answers to missing parts questions. In this respect the round dial is an advantage since Monarch put exploded pictures in the manual.

The parts manual identifies #76 as a bushing. Does that mean the compound screw nut (#77) "floats" in the swivel (#88), i.e., it is not screwed tight to the swivel?
 
On mine, the nut is held in place by a washer and a common SHCS with a button head (probably not original):
