Now that the auction is over, anybody know what this was for? If it is impossible to know --- if there is no way to know how many parts were removed immediately prior to sale, then oh well. Did Monarch outfit lathes for the government for a special purpose that did not require many of the basic functions of the lathe?

Surplus Monarch 16" Boring Machine in Doyle, California, United States (GovPlanet Item #3391357)

I was tempted by it as base for a project, but did not go for it.

You never know...... May have come out of area 51, too...

Probably was fixtured for some special requirement. Government bought many of machines for special purpose use. When they get rid of them, all of the top secret stuff is removed before it goes to the bone yard.
A place I workde at many years ago, they bought the old gun boring lathes from the government. They came complety stripped of any tooling that was used in the manufacture of gun barrels, including the rifeling attachments. We talking big large long machines that were used to make the big gun barrels. Ken

Maybe just a parts donor - with LEAD SCREW REVERSE intact (Long upper rod with its control lever right top of apron), it sure USED TO BE a nice regular Monarch
