headstock noise

I am using my ee with a sjorgren (spelling questionable) 5c collet chuck, and occasionally there is a clicking noise in the chuck/headstock area, and I am paranoid that the headstock bearings may be going out. 1983 EM with electric leadscrew reverse. Otherwise, a way better lathe than I deserve or can machine up the standard it sets.
Does anyone have any thoughts in this matter?
Thanks
Bill

It is common for the Sjogren chucks to click as they get older, and Peter has said in the past that it is probably something you can ignore. Does it stop when the chuck is removed?

"It is common for the Sjogren chucks to click as they get older"

Three-jaw chucks with three pinions often click as they rotate. This is simply the pinions moving towards the outside of the chuck body, falling under the influence of gravity.

As the outer gear of a Sjogren, which is also the handwheel, wears, it will loosen. This is normal, and will also click, and for the same reason.

I'd be more worried about the three-jaw than the Sjogren.
