I have a 1939 Monarch CK lathe that needs a replacement plate for the clutch. It is the plate that has the holes to adjust the clutch plate clearance (don't know the correct name for the plate). The plate does work but has a crack coming from the keyway. I need to make a replacement while the lathe still works. Question is what type of steel would I use for this. McMaster Carr sells discs made from various steels: low carbon, high strength 1045, 4140, hardening steels etc. Part does not look too hard to make and tolerances don't appear to be too critical except getting the adjusting holes on the correct center line.
