Odd cross slide gib on EE10. Original?

I've got the cross slide off a 1942 EE10. The gib has a funny piece on the end that screws into it. The manual doesn't show this.
Did the factory do this? Was a home-made repair done at some time?

Looks like someone has had a gib with too wide a slot, which has jammed at some time and broken the end off. It's been repaired by using the set screw to make it work as a push-pull with the added bonus of creating a lock for the adjusting screw.

Or they machined the dovetail during an overhaul and rather than make a new gib to fit the wider slot, cut the small end off and added a chunk to the large end.

Thanks guys. The is what I suspected but being a pre-newbie on these lathes, I'm very uncertain of any of my own ideas.

Working on this is much like working on antique cars, which I also do. After 75 years of owner-repairs and modifications, it takes a lot of sleuthing to discover what was original. I have a box of parts for a 1933 Morgan that came with the car but that never passed through factory hands.
