Hi,

I recently bought an old Monarch toolroom lathe.
The brass name plate is missing, so I'm not sure of the model.
It looks like a 20" swing and 48" between centers.
I went through the whole thing and got everything cleaned up
and working, but I can't figure out what spindle mount is on it.
It has a large ( about 8-1/4" diameter ) flange that has a bolt
hole pattern slightly larger than A2-8 and the taper is larger than
A2 also. I read that it might be called a "Monarch 1930 spindle"
in the manual that came with it. Are there adaptors available to
maybe say convert this to A1-8? Or is it better if I just make my own
back plate fitted to whatever chuck I find.

Thanks,

Mike

This is the Monarch flanged spindle. I had a 22" CM with that, or similar. Yours makes the second one I have heard of. Nothing standard about it, except maybe to Monarch when they made it. My 22" CM was serial 4742. Assembly drawing M-1683 dated 4/11/41 just refers to it as the "Flanged Spindle"

Here is the drawing number for that spindle. M-1527

You could call up Monarch and ask for a scan of that end of that drawing. Maybe they could even email it to you.

Then you would have some dimensions from the "horse's mouth"
