My 1942 10EE uses string packing around the shaft that engages the reverse clutch rack. Has anyone ever just replaced it with a stack of modern O-rings? The shaft is .750" and the hole for the packing is ~15/16", which works out nicely for a standard 3/32" O-ring.

I found if the dimensions are suitable, to replace that kind of old tech with press -in single lipped oil seals. But if not, a o -ring is a good substitute.

Mcmaster has all different packing strings. The hole you refer to is threaded and I was concerned o-rings wouldn't seal on the threads so I used packing from Mcmaster.
