Looking for a solution. We have small parts that do not have much weight to them. We need to accurately count them for bagging. We have tried to use a scale and tare it out to do a regular part count. Not accurate, parts are too small for the scales we have. Looking more for detection equipment. Not sure because of the weight if anything but laser would work. What type of automation is recommended? :)Thanks for your time.
 
How many different parts ?

can you simply Polk Yolk it with some boards with holes in them ?

slide a handfull across the board, only 1 can occupy each hole,
shake off the excess.

What type of scale were you using? We have scales in use that have a .0001 gram resolution. Those will accurately count #2 set screws, and probably smaller.
 
Is the size, shape and weight of the parts a secret? Material the parts are made out of? What kind of quantity are we talking here? 50 per day? 3,000 per day? Are they coming in on a conveyor? By the handful?
 
Check out AnD at the link below. It has save us hundreds of man-hours dealing with micro sized parts.

FX-2I | A&D Weighing

If the parts exist, this will weigh and count them accurately. We weigh some pieces of .030" OD/.017" hypo tubing with ours and it works well. You need to shield the balance from wind in the room for most accuracy.
 
It's hard to say without seeing the part/drawing. You might be able to count them with a Cognex camera.
 
People had to count the number of mini paper cups in a stack at very high speed and weight would not work.
This was solved before there was a IBM PC.
All depends on the parts and how the packaging is filled.
When weight fails due to weight per piece variation and pack size, opto, laser, vision but these need part separation.
Counting the number of M&Ms flowing into a pack at the fill speed would be hard but this is sold by weight.
