Back Plates & Face Plates for Schaublin Lathes: Stupid to use steel?

...or is that simply a stupid question? :dunce:

I'm planning to make a couple from steel for myself, and knowing there are risks with galling, etc, I plan on cleaning lightly oiling the spindle threads each mount/dismount.

BUT, there are a few others interested in them as well. I don't want to sell someone a back plate or face plate that is dangerous, dumb, or prone to seize, no matter how much I warn the purchaser. I have access to some 5"+ steel round but not cast iron. I could buy the iron slugs but steel is much easier and cheaper for me to find anyway.

I'm told it is not a good idea to use steel on threaded spindles. Thoughts? Warnings? I'll take any correction!

Cast Iron would be best. The cast iron has free carbon it it which will work as a lubricant and prevent galling.Plus CI is a lot easier to work with. Your making a part for a valuable lathe don't cheap out on material. The cost of the material will be a small part of the cost of making a backplate.
