Hi,

Over the last year I have reconditioned and repaired an old Graziano 12S lathe.

Part of the recondition was to clean and blacken the dials. They were rusty and you could
barely see the numbers.

I cleaned them and blacken the marking... Today I see that part of the carriage dial has some
rust again.

Anyone triad spraying translucent spray over the dials ?

I spryed it all with protective oil but it still rusted again, any ideas what to do.

Thanks,
Noam.

Hi Noam,

It’s true: rust never sleeps. I don’t think any kind of clear coat would work for long on lathe dials that are used regularly. I was having rust trouble with my chuck that I recently cleaned up, due to the fact that my machine is currently in an unheated metal storage building, and it’s the rainy, cold time of year here. I’ve gotten in the habit of spraying things that rust with WD40 (which I buy in the gallon can) and covering the machine with a tarp when I leave. That works quite well for me and isn’t hard to do.

Roger
