Hello,

My buddy has a Leinen LZ4S lathe that has been a bit too hot.
At least that is what I think...

The spindle in the headstock is turning too heavy after he had turning nylon for hours...
Probably he has not oiled it for ages, has had the lathe for ten years and he never oiled it..
Now you can hardly turn the chuck by hand if it's not connencted.
So I was planning to take out the spindle, but all I can do is release the radial bearing play..
The chuck will not come loose, so I can't take the spindle in the headstock apart.

My question is simple :rolleyes5:
How do you take the spindle apart and take it out the headstock?
I can't find the info I need on this.
I assume the chuck is turned on with threads, because I don't see any other way the chuck is mounted.
We want to take this machine apart and clean it, measure it and put in new bearings as neccessary.

Is there anybody who has info on how to take the headstock apart??
Any info is welcome.
Thank you in advance!!

The pics:
The first is exactly the one we have, the second is the headstok.
If neccessary I can make mor pics.

Thank you whidbey.

We used very light oil to loosen thing up.
It worked a little bit, but the spindle turns yet too heavy.
We have got the manual, but there is only written how to bolt off the complete headstock, not how to dismantle the spindle unfortunatly..
If we want to check the bearings, it have to come out.

Looking at the drawing I would say take the srews out of pos 5
Then at the left you remove the nut MSB 38x1,5
Now the spindle shuold be able to be removed to the right

Here is how I remove a spindle from a lathe
attachment.php

With the chuck on a bit more difficult but possible
It may take a decent amount of force as several gears have a tight fit on the spindle

Thanks Peter.

I think you're right with take off the large nut at pos. 5 and take off the nuts M38 x 1,5.
I was searching on the net and found a PDF file, which should be of the LZ4S.
This is almost the drawing from the other post.
Unfortunatly I can't upload the PDF??

The chuck is on via threads in this PDF, but it wont come of...
How much force is needed to take this apart?
I realy don't want it damaged further..

I will take pics as soon as I'm at the lath again.

Leinen lz 4 s

Hello . I am from the UK. Just this week I purchased a LEINEN LZ4 S.

I think the machine number is 28731 - I do not know the date of manufacture - does anyone have information about machine numbers and manufacture dates ?

My machine is very dirty , but looks in good condition under the old oil and dirt and not used for many years .

I will dismantle the main spindle to clean everything and also to make a new backplate for a new chuck - I will use the spindle as a gauge to make the new threads on another machine. I will dismantle the complete machine to clean and restore it.

I like the quality of the Leinen machine - I am a machine tool engineer - now retired - I worked with DEAN, SMITH & GRACE for many years - so I can recognise a quality machine when I see it !

Please contact me - we can share our experiences with this machine .

Here is my email : [email protected]

Hey Nick,

I'm also a Brit who lives in Germany and have just got an MLZ4s which looks like a right find.
Just thought I'd say hi in case you're anywhere near the Black Forest.
Cheers,
Rich.
