a quick intro of myself: I am a newbie machinist/hobbyist - a beginner to be precise; I have recently acquired a S&B Model A - MK-I lathe from a local shop at a reasonable price.

Do a google search with << site: "practicalmachinist.com" Smart&Brown >>, find 494 returns, start browsing.

They are good-enough lathes - very good - that most folk who have one are busy making stuff, not waiting for your query.

I'd not seen one of those before, a predecessor to the 1024?

I believe yes.

BTW, if anyone's interested in the labeled external body, got this from the user manual.
