Picked me up a scrap haul Friday. Plant said they just wanted it gone. 15,000 lbs of 316 stainless. Scrap yard quoted me 38 cents a pound.

Most of the time the master cylinder will have the make and model cast right into the housing. Every forklift I've fooled with (besides Cat) has used a standard MC that can be had at NAPA. Cat has a...

Our local scrap yard has 3 copper grades, Bare Bright (shinny spotless copper wire), #1 (still clean copper of larger sizes, can be tarnished but not burnt. #2 ( burnt copper, or even smaller sized...

Yep, I've got 2. I'm not that rough on them though. I've seen at my local dealer where people rip the rollers out from under them, bend the cylinders, and roll beam flanges, from getting too rough...

There is a whole lot of truth to that. Smaller forklifts can be a real pain to work on, no room. I do bet forklift mechanics make a lot better money than car mechanics.

Do you have a pic? I haven’t messed with this particular model, but have worked on lots of mast.
Is it a roller mounted on the outside of the mast? I know we have a Taylor with these outside...

Well, I would submit that the load is the same on mast, regardless of the weight on the forks, if the back wheels are off the ground. In other words, if you have a 5,000 lb load at 24” center and it...

I suspect most online calculators are so conservative as to avoid liability. I just wanted to make sure I was doing it right with my calculations.

Forklift capacity at various load centers

Everybody knows that forklifts are rated for X lbs at X from the face of the forks, but what do you do if you are outside those parameters? My standard equation has always been to figure the forklift...

If you move it a bunch, I’d build a skid under it with fork pockets. If it is a very seldom move just use slings under the mounting plate.

Looking at your drawing, the mill seems to be bolted down to the 2x6. That probably won’t work. You need the bolts to go down through the mill and the 4x4s. Even though the mill is bolted to the 2x6,...

This is one limiting factor I see. Even if you could get some sort of electric solenoid or actuator to hold the spring back, I would think it would take a massive current draw, and would have to be...

I have people all the time call to have a machine moved, and only know the weight, and expect me to price it just off that. Dimensions of the machine are every bit as important as the weight....

All CNC machines I’ve seen do have provisions for overhead lifting, but it’s usually a pain, with different sling lengths and sheet metal in the way. It’s best to move them with forks, if you have a...

Are you smelling propane when you try to start? It could be flooding. Sometimes when the regulator/vaporizer screws up it can just dump fuel in.

Yep, it's a OSHA requirement that you do a daily inspection (it's actually each shift). Don't forget that you are also required to have proof of training for any operators. In 35 years, we've never...

I know nothing about the mill, I just know they won’t mill the bolt heads off. Union shop, and the operators just won’t do something out of the ordinary that they don’t want to do.

I had thought about a end cutting end mill, and we may try that. We don't have to be super precise, as the aluminum plates are scrap, we just need to be lined up close enough to remove the head....

Drilling heads off grade 8 bolts

We've got a project coming up where we will more than likely have to drill the heads off of some 5/8" Allen head bolts.

We've done this project before and know a little about what we are getting...

I’ve been using the Bulldog sliding sleeve couplers for years. Best ball hitch IMO. They are also about the only ones that build a decent trailer jack.

You can get just the wheels, axles, and bearings from them and build the frame to save a little money. Or you could just order the bearings and build the whole skates if you wish.
