I ran an old hand reamer through the 1 inch holes. Also in the video you can see two white disks in two holes... Those are 1 inch...

Either one of those would just kill me now :)

The step drills have a regular drill tip on the end and you can start the hole with it. Step drills I buy usually are found in the electrician tools section. Ones that can do up to 1.25" are around...

I carry step drills on my work trailer that is set up for installing access systems and gate operators. Out in the field they work very well for making electrical conduit holes in boxes and drilling...
