    Like kitno455 said, I'd do what ever I had to to make the lever you have work. The original lever is a pain to use. So much so that I ended up buying a newer head and replaced the original head.

    I would just lightly snug the caps on an stick a feeler guage on each side and adjust the guages till both sides are the same thickness. Then you'll know you'll need be proud of that measurement.
