Automotive gear oils (GL5) that have EP additives contain sulfur compounds that will cause trouble with any bronze internals....

For my money don't believe you want to preload...
For my money don't believe you want to preload the end bearings in the spindle....The inner races are indeed crowded together from the end of the spindle through the main drive pulley and feed drive...

Might be a bad idea, but you could not prove it by me in this case......my FP4NC had shifting issues with a sluggish brake (if memory serves).....replaced the device and the issue persisted.......
