Be careful using "gear oil" if not specifically called for.
Automotive gear oils (GL5) that have EP additives contain sulfur compounds that will cause trouble with any bronze internals....

"Y" axis moves like a boring mill, sensitive quill on the horizontal ...One with a universal table can rotate and tilt in two planes...easy to tram the part.......

For my money don't believe you want to preload the end bearings in the spindle....The inner races are indeed crowded together from the end of the spindle through the main drive pulley and feed drive...

So ya got a real suggestion or ya just gonna nay say......???????

Did you measure the width of all the gear teeth produced as suggested earlier on the spoiled part?
Think the answer is there.....
Once owned a dividing head that had excessive wear in one portion...

The blank diameter will not cause the problem of having one tooth out of size...That is totally caused by either the part slipping when indexed of missing the dividing steps.

Might be a bad idea, but you could not prove it by me in this case......my FP4NC had shifting issues with a sluggish brake (if memory serves).....replaced the device and the issue persisted.......

One additional note:
There is a capacitor ? (black plastic rectangular case with two wire leads ) connected across the brake relay contacts.....Have had trouble with the brake on shifting with this...

Would have guess that you held off of fitting the new scale till after the table was re-painted.....
