Worse yet, the key driving the cone gear in the apron has completely worn out and the lead screw is just spinning in the gear and not driving anymore. This should be a easy check by shining a flash...

That looks like tooling to a vertical turret lathe.

I don't remember the size. Seem like it was either .250" dia or .312" dia. It wasn't a odd ball size, it was a standard size from what I remember. Sorry I'm not of much help.

That so called bushing is nut that holds the spindle together. It has a LEFT HAND thread, that's why it gets tight trying to get it off. This feature is on all sizes of Gorton mills. Ken

Looks like someone did a very nice job rescraping your lathe. Being that old, I don't think that would be factory.... I could be wrong. I did notice in my pictures, LEhmann did spot...

The "73" indicates shield on one side of the bearing. If it was "773" this would be a double shielded bearing. It is a "extra light series" bearing according to my bearing interchange manual. 6009...
