Welp, just had a meeting with HR. Looks like next years healthcare plans are going up 8% across the board for the exact same medical plans.

THANKS BARRY ! Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

As someone who is
A- Old
and
B- has always paid 100% of his own heath care costs

I can tell you that this exact same thing has happened, pretty much every year since your granny was born.
I have been able to thank Gerry Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Bush 1 and 2, Clinton, and Obama for the increase in my health care premiums.

There was a time when I paid around $42 a month, total.
Before Obamacare, I was paying $1200 a month, out of pocket, plus $4000 deductible...

Us old hippies have a saying, we used to say this in the sixties-

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Don't forget to thank all the lawyers who have made billions suing doctors, hospitals, drug companies. That's all built into the health care costs not counting all the people who get free everything.

Malpractice costs (lawyers, insurance, and payouts) is about 2% of the total cost of healthcare for the entire usa.
In other words, practically nothing.

Overhead and profit for the insurance company, on the other hand, is 30%, just like it was under Reagan...

here we go again...

and socialized medicine makes no sense, why? The US could do much better paying about the same as Canada pays, oh no...that is socialism :). They will encroach on your rights with pinko communism :). Just reminds me, the US is #38 in health outcomes and pays $9800 per person for that.

You forgot about the money the hospitals steal. My dr ofice (which was for profit) was bought out by the non profit UNC system. The office visit price doubled overnight.

Plus the cost of drugs! We pay for the development costs of the rest of the world. And the waste in the system boggles the mind. My wife worked in it. Its bad.

It is time for ALL health coverage to be dropped by employers. All cost on the consumer. Then all of them will drop coverage. And the entire system will collapse. This will force a real overhaul.

hmmm,

that is an interesting way to solve the problem :)...but how to do it is a big question. Once people start shopping around they will see the huge discrepancies.

How much is spent on defensive medicine? Overtesting, overimaging, overconsulting, etc caused by the threat of lawsuits?

While we're at it, how much is the outcome of illness affected by insurance companies NOT paying for procedures and drugs? How much is the outcome of illness affected by the FDA not approving drugs for use until they are old enough to vote? How much do the 2 above items contribute to the low rating of the US in outcomes?

I can agree 100%. I have been working since 1996 and every year like clockwork healthcare went up. the only time it went down was when i changed jobs to work for a company with more employees. It does suck that you get docked for not having healthcare now though. I don't like paying for nothing.:ack2:

Could you please tell us when the last time was that health care costs went down? Or maybe even tell us how the 8% increase compares to the increases you had during the last presidents term. I saw 15 to 20% increases a lot during that time and that included discounts for employees joining stay healthy programs.

How much do you think the increase would have been if mitt robme had won the last election?

Sounds extreme, but my Wife and I have essentially DONE that, Cancelled Medicare part B to put $100+ back into MY pocket each month, never had C or D. Discarded the card for part A that cannot be cancelled.

We now rely on zero US 'plans', and several years on - no problem. A Hong Kong issued Manulife policy covers the 'real world' with headroom to spare, given the costs are so much lower just about ANYWHERE else we might be.

So I think you are correct.

Toss it out and start fresh, essentially.

Seriously doubt anyone would have to 'die' during the transition. Unless the odd Lawster or inch-hoorance Exec were to go hungry..

Stone Age didn't end 'coz we were outta stones. Sumthin' better was adopted.

We are for-damned-sure overdue for a change, and intentions for good or ill entirely aside - 'Bamacare has proven-out to just not be 'it'.

That's funny...

My insurance went up 18% this year, granted it went up 0.7% last year... Then again its about what I was
paying 12 years ago....

Far cry from the $24 a month I paid back in the 90's. But the company I worked for added $120 a month to that.
And for some strange reason I've gotten older as the time has passed.

It keeps going up, always has and will probably continue until the system puts itself out of business.

My plan, that I pay for out of pocket, is going away this April. Had it for several(5 maybe)years with increases every year...but mild increases.

Now if I go to the 'marketplace' it's going to double... and coverage will be worse.

I'm going to research my options of course but it looks bad for me, not sure I want to pay a good house payment every month for something that's going to keep costing me more should I use it.

from my perspective the rate of increase doubled once the aca was passed.

if Mitt had won, its hard to say but I am hoping it will slow down a bit

Going to cost more if you use it, or not. I was on a drug that was ~$1200 a month. Generic (not yet available in US yet, patent issue) was $200. My take is drugs cost the same to US consumer as ANY OTHER first world buyer. Or you can charge more if you wish but no patent protection.

As for the mention above about defensive medicine. Years ago I was uninsured. Went to doctor with a problem. They looked me over and figured it was one of 3 things, tried to order a battery of tests. Dr had NO clue what the cost was and I explained that I was self pay and didnt have unlimited funds and would not allow any test without a price list up front. All 3 issues used same treatment. Antibiotics. And test results were days away but would start antibiotics immediately. I refused tests. So they gave me the antibiotics and banned me from the practice for refusing "testing and treatment". So the moral of the story, we will rob you or screw off.
