They are usually screwed on. Does the stem have little wrench flats on it? If not I am not sure. Older Federal indicators used a spring mechanism with 'teeth' that you pulled in and out...

See that little disc? That's the wrench to remove the stylus. It goes across the little flats and unscrews.
I have never heard of nor seen that disc in any of the full or basic Mitutoyo indicator sets I've bought.

I have two sets, one with disc wrench, one without.
OP, the thickness of mine is .03" if that helps
Out of curiosity are they metric or imperial? I know there are some omissions on some imperial tooling like the limit markets on their dial indicators.

Both imperial, .0005" reading. One vertical (no wrench), one hori multi position, like this -

Interesting... I personally use https://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/62691613 and no wrench is included.
I don't mind pocketing the $300 difference for the lack of wrench and 4mm reduced contact point length though!
