I think I have been very clear about not owning a shop. I did however manage one for a number of years, but I digress. What about your statement makes my opinions any less valid than yous??
edit: I have no problem with you, but you have made some very dick comments to a guy that has been a memeber here forever AND was brave enough to lay out what his shop does, what has worked and what didn't, his struggles on getting running, etc etc. And YOU just give vague references. I won't comment on the name of that multibillion shop (publicly) I worked out because I signed some legal stuff when I got laid off and accepted my severance package. I doubt they would care much about it 2-3 years later, but not willing to chance it.

I would love to come to work for you, as I never required a lot of sleep, if you can pay be 50% more than minimum wage and give me 30-40 hours a week working around my college studies we have a deal. I will be loyal as can be and will work odd hours, I am a very fast learner. I think we can have a mutually beneficial relationship for about 4 years.
P.S. Sorry Wheelie, that was my bad example how things have changed. That was me acting like I saw your post in 1979, as I am 59 years old born in 1961. Things have changed here, but not for the better.

The difference is I had the balls to risk my own money, you didnt.
Phoenix is the 5th largest city in the USA. He's 22 miles away from the 5th largest city in the USA.... problem isnt the lack of people, its the lack of something else.
I asked my 2 employees that came from the phx area what they were getting paid at their last job and both were making around $28 an hour at modern industries.

Fuck man! What the fuck is wrong with you? I am NOT trying to hire a machinist!
I am trying to hire a mechanically inclined KID with decent work ethics, fresh out of high-school, that does not want to work at a burger joint.
I am sure there is a great candidate stuck flipping burgers within 10 miles of me right now who would take a pay cut to come work here. I just need to find him.
For fuck's fucking sake!

OK, I see you risked money so you know best... carry on.
ps. If you read my posts you will see I clearly said I had no interest in owning a shop. If you don't want to cook, don't cook. Don't want to drive, ride a bike. Who cares??
All you have done is try and belittle wheelie for HIS choices. His (and most likely everyone here) has their own idea of what is "right" and what they want out of life. There are guys out there content to sit in front of a molding press all day and sweat their ass off unloading and trimming parts all day... their business I guess....

I'm sure you were referring to my post, evidently I wasn't being serious in terms of pay, but anyway fuck you.
What I think Wheelie is looking for in a worker and his expectations are reasoneable. Although I would add a bathroom. Even a chemical toilet in a plywood 4x4 room in the corner is better than nothing.

OK and..?
I lived in Beaufort, SC. I made $70k year salary. It had a population of just over 12k in 2010 (I was there 2013-2014). What does that have to do with anything? Just because it is a giant city doesn't necessarily mean there is more talent, regardless of industry. Sure, the odds go up.... but nothing is concrete.

Like wheelie I too have a small shop and am always looking for help . I give him a lot of credit for putting it out there . After see all the crap some of you are throwing at him because he wants to live his life and run his business his way Jesus calm down. Not everyone aspires to be the next Howard hughs he started with a tool and die shop . A lot of us can’t compete with wages and bennies because we’re too small . Sure the more people you have the easier that gets but sometimes it’s like feeding a monster .just saying

Its not about him wanting to live his life with the small mom/pop shop...nothing wrong with that. The issue is:
1) he comes on here to bitch about not finding good employees
2) we find out he pays $12.50 an hour which is 50 cents more than minimum wage for a semi to skilled job
3) we suggest he pay more and he says "not enough money in the jobs to pay more"
4) we suggest he isnt charging enough money and suggest options for higher paying work
5) he doesnt want to do anything different to get higher paying work
so we have come full circle...
He doesnt want to grow his shop, he doesnt want to pay a fair wage, he doesnt want to do actions that can get higher paying work. HE WANTS TO COME HERE AND BITCH ABOUT BEING A TIGHTWAD OSHA LAW BREAKING BOSS.
