My company just got hacked, pretty ingenious way too. They've had a job posted for a couple months with a few replies. Yesterday they got three replies within a few hours, resumes cover letters etc. Next thing you know tech/purchaser gets an email from Amazon confirming his new lap top order only he didn't order it. On further more thorough review of the resumes and cover letters they were all very close in wording and content. Please be careful.

Somebody recently somehow got a hold of my SS number and is running around trying to open charge accounts in my name.
There is a very expensive ring floating around the greater Phoenix area right now.
Even with a block on my credit reports, they are still managing to get accounts opened.
So far it hasn't cost me any money. But, it has been a major pain in the ass.
What is pissing me off the most is this:
The police are involved. I know for a fact this is a local individual. The reason I am certain of this is:
They went to a local payday loan place and tried to borrow money. This place has no on-line services. You have to visit the establishment.
Which means there is video someplace of this POS masquerading as me.
At least one of the Home Depot charge cards (yes there were more than one) were also originated at a local store.
Yet, nobody seems to be doing anything to catch this ass-hole.
I have my suspicions of who and how. But, the fraud investigators are definitely on their own schedule :mad5:
They haven't even contacted the payday loan place yet, and have known about it for over 30 days.

^ Look on the bright side, if you can find him you can legally shoot him as suicide is not illegal :-)

IME a small amount of cash to the correct employee will get you CCTV access and once you have the picture you may well be able to ID them. At least over here in the uk its pretty common if it is a local that its actually some one known to you.

The problem here is the fact that you have to do more here than the cops. Do some research yourself and check with them at least once a week.
When I had a problem I actually had one of them admit that the complaints went into a file and if there was no activity in 6 months it was discarded.

You are not the only one with a problem, there are others out there, some with bigger problems than yours.
You have to make it easier for them to do their job than it is to deal with you. Stay on it.

Phishing through email attachments containing buried code is pretty common. We use only non-networked computers for receiving email—pretty crude I know, but it's at least one step removed from any important data they could steal.

Advertising of employment opportunities gets immediately picked up and disseminated by all kinds of outside agents. We ran a local ad a year ago and got applications from India. One thing you can do is require that the applicant's information be contained in the body of their message. If it's a very vague and brief message, don't open the attachment...

Some of you know about how my rental car was broken in when we were teaching a class out in Oakland CA. Long story short is it was at a Jack in the Box fast food. The JnBox had security cameras and the had the guy on video, his car and plate. We called the Oakland PD after it happened and the said they could get a car out in 5 hours to take the report.

We drove down to the PD and filed a report in person that morning. Jack in Box said they would keep the recording for 30 days. The PD never went there and told us later they were to busy with major crimes to fool with petty thief. My sons backpack with 8000.00 worth of camera's and my laptop was stolen. We were out of the car for 2 minutes max. The police are to busy catching speeders, but no time to catch thiefs.....sighhhhh

In 2001 my identity was stolen and they racked up $40k in fraudulent CC charges in 2 months. I called Detroit PD and got the run around. They told me there wasn’t a damn thing I could do about it because they were stealing from the CC company and not me. They ordered computers, paid for their WiFi service(AOL), got their hair done, gas, food, furniture, cash advances... you name it, they bought it.

I received a big envelope and had to sign my name 100x. All 8 CC company’s loss prevention reps said they knew where the fraud was coming from but will write it off. I couldn’t believe it, I told them I wished they got me for $100k. After four months they fixed my credit report and it was like it never happened.
