When I worked in a research lab years ago the custodian told me she was not allowed to touch the top of the lab tables. She cleaned the floor, windows, bathrooms, hallways etc. But anything on the table was off limits to her. She had no idea what was in a unlabelled bottle it could be radioactive, posionius and a bio hazard all in one.
Of course in a shop heavy stuff can be left on the floor because it is raw materials to be loaded into a machine so such a rule would not fit all situations.
I know the local Home Depot has been using contracted floor cleaners for the last several years. They drive floor cleaning machines around during the work day. There are folks who make a living going around to doctors offices and cleaning fishtanks or watering plants.
