I was reading on Frank Ford's FRET.com (Very good by the way)and he talks about setting his compound at an angle, so that every .001 mark on the compound dial = .0001 cut on the work diameter.

Any idea what compound angle that is?

Actually 2.866 degrees off spindle axis will get you half a tenth infeed, needed for one tenth on dia.

This assumes compound is one to one, unlike the normal two to one crossfeed dial.

Stand in front of a lathe for ten years and you can turn a tenth, doesn't matter what the compound angle is. Not before.

Truthfully, the monarchs divisions are wide enough, that with care, IE, same approach cuts every time, you can come within a couple thou on your rough, and tap it in to a few tenths every time. Beats screwing up your Z dimension to try with the compound
