I can get an enco 9"x49" variable speed with dro and power feeed $500 cheaper then the jet 9"x42" jtm-1 with dro, power feed, and non variable speed. Is jet that much better then enco for heavy gunsmithing work?

Gunsmithing usually isn't too hard on a mill and many gunsmiths use Enco machines.

Generally speaking the Jet machines are considered, by those who may know more about both brands than I, to be of better quality as far as fit and finish of the machine. Both machines use Chinese castings and only vary in the details. Be sure to get American made motors on whatever you buy. They will last longer and are easier to find a replacement for years down the road.

My 2 cents.

I would go with the jet. I sell machines for a living and the enco's can be hard to get parts for. A enco 10 years old you usually can't get parts for.

SIR,
i suggest the jet, as i have one.
however it is not made in china.
it is a 1991 model, i bought it in
1993, so it was not beat up. i added
readouts, and feed, it is a JTM-1,
16 speeds. i like it, and can do very
good work with it.
good luck with your projects.
