Forgive me if this is the wrong forum but am curious what peoples thoughts might be in comparing a late 40s 14" Hendey gear head with a gear head Lodge & Shipley of similar size and vintage.

Hendey is a great medium weight tool room machine made in Connecticut. Were made in both 12 and 18 speed versions. 18 speed is the high speed version

L&S Model A is similar but made in Ohio, 12 speeds, period. These did not evolve into high speed machines until the late fifties

L&S Model X is a HEAVY DUTY tool room class machine. By the early fifities, the 14" was available with 2000 RPM and 20 HP. They all have 24 speeds.

L&S made quite a few lathes that if I found one at a justifiable cost I would make room in my shop for it. Can't say that about Hendey. Hendey made nice machines, but not L&S X class.

Late 40's is right in the prime of American machine tool perfection. Some amazing stuff was made here over a few decades, if it's still around today it was probably built plenty good enough.
